Safety Tips for Kids Halloween Costumes, Part 2

…continued from Part 1

spiderman boys halloween costumeNow that we have the safety issues related to fit taken care of, it’s time to ask how safe is the actual costume for your child?

Many kids’ Halloween costumes come with accessories such as guns, swords, and other weapons that look very realistic and may not be safe for children. It’s important that your children don’t go out with realistic-looking weapons, so make sure that any accessories your child’s costume includes look obviously fake.

Resistance to fire is another important consideration when assessing the safety of your child’s Halloween costume. Most costumes for kids come with a flame-resistant label. It’s important to have this if you will be around jack-o-lanterns that have been lit with candles or around open fires of any sort.

Although many of the houses your child will visit on his Halloween adventures will be lit with plastic jack-o-lantern luminaries, some people still carve pumpkins to fill with candles and you may find these on the doorsteps you visit. Having a flame-resistant costume ensures that if your child does come into contact with a lit candle or other open flame, any fire on his costume can be quickly put out.

Finally, let’s talk about the darkness. Even though most trick-or-treating takes place earlier that it used to, it still gets dark fairly early by the end of October. It’s important to make sure your children are visible, especially when it comes to traffic.

In order to make sure your child is able to be easily seen, you can enhance his costume with reflective tape. Another idea that works well is to add clip-on lights (similar to the ones campers and cyclists use) to strategic points on their costumes.

Sending your child out with a flashlight is another good way to make sure he is visible to others, and it also helps him to see where he’s going!

When it comes right down to it, kids’ Halloween costume safety really comes down to these few common sense tips. But don’t forget to talk to your children as well and explain why it’s important to be safe while you’re out having fun.

Happy Halloween!

Safety Tips for Kids Halloween Costumes, Part 1

Captain America boys halloween costumeHalloween is a time for fun, and that usually means that for your kids safety is the last thing on their minds. As a parent, however, there are a few safety tips you should consider buying or making your kids’ Halloween costumes.

The first area of consideration should be the costume itself. While there are a lot of great ready-made costumes available, they usually come in sizes of small, medium, and large. That means that for your child, the fit may not always be optimal. There are a few important size-related issues that you should check your child’s costume for so that they don’t become safety hazards.

1. Length

Can you child walk easily in his costume? If not, the costume may be too long for him, causing him to trip and fall.

If you’re handy with a needle and thread you can always hem up the costume to make it safer. Or if you’re like me and couldn’t sew a button to save your life, there’s always no-iron hem tape to get you through the night. Either way, making sure your child’s costume is the right length to safely walk and run in will ensure that any spills are not the fault of the costume.

2. Masks

Masks are a big part of kid’s Halloween costumes, but they can also be very dangerous if they don’t fit properly.

One of the biggest drawbacks of a mask that doesn’t fit right is that it hampers your vision. It’s hard to see where you’re going if your mask is always falling in front of your eyes.

Another thing to consider, especially when using a full face mask that covers the entire head, is whether or not your child is able to breathe freely and easily inside the mask.

3. Footwear

Many costume kits come with footwear that matches the costume. If shoes or other footwear are included in your child’s costume, you should make sure these fit will and are comfortable before heading out for the evening. It’s no fun trick-or-treating when your feet hurt!
